How Christians Should Behave During This Political Climate

I am neither republican or democrat and am not going to discuss political issues or my views on healthcare but rather want to challenge us to see how Christ wants us to behave as Christians when faced with the political culture. How should we act? Should we shout, yell, call our government leaders names? I think it is important to understand that scripture stresses that our government leaders whether it be the President, Senetors, or others officals are in the positions they are because of God and His will. Paul stresses this in his letters and tells us how to treat those in authority. Christlike. We should be Christlike in all aspects of our life. Paul tells us in 1st Timothy 2:1-ff, "The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for every one you know. Pray especially for rulers and their goverments to rule well so we can be quietly about the business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live." We should pray. Pray for our President and goverment. Pray for our leaders to make the right decissions. We need not forget that prayer is powerful and our God listens to all of our requests when we pray with the right heart. Jesus, Paul, Peter, and John remind us to not get to comfortable in this world but to live as aliens, strangers, remembering we have an eternal Kingdom not made by human hands. For those of you who are Americans I am sure that you agree with me that you are glad to be here and now. I don't know about tomorrow but, "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!" Jesus words challenge me everyday to "Love my neighbor as myself." Who is my neighbor? Is it republicans? Democrats? Homosexuals? Muslims? Athiests? Yes. Jesus words. "LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." During this political climate are we loving our neighbors as ourselves? Do we see it? Are we living it?

What do you think?

I would add: Don't slander those with whom we disagree. Before protesting the president's speech to school children, read it. Don't assume that it is evil. Before calling someone a racist for disagreeing with the president, see why he or she disagrees. It is possible to disagree with President Obama without consideration of his race.

Good post, Kinney.

If you are not Democrat or Republican, does that make you Libertarian or Green Party? Heh, heh.

I think we should be polite in our disagreement with whatever we think, much like we should be with religions with disagree with. Politeness doesn't mean weakness.
One can be polite and stand strong.

Great post. I think Christians need to rise above the fray, rather than jumping into the mud with the other… err, mud wrestlers.

Grace and peace,

There certainly has been a chill in the political climate in the past few years.

Part of loving someone is humbly pointing out when they are doing wrong. That applies to our rulers, as well.

Also, consider that God doesn't always exalt one to a position of power because they would be a good ruler or because it was the best thing to do; look at Pharaoh and Saul.

But in the bottom line, I agree with all the commenters so far: we need to exemplify Jesus, especially in the political arena.

This came up on my blog and I was surprised to see that some use scripture to validate name calling. Check this post out: http://kansasbob.com/.../two-sides-of-name-calling.html

Have you ever heard the song "A King and a Kingdom" by Derek Webb?

i wish we would learn in deeper and deeper ways to view ourselves as members of a *kingdom,* and as 'americans' incidentally.

i don't see in the NT where it was the goal of first century Christians to turn Rome into a Christian theocracy. But if you listen to much Christian talk radio, tons of evangelicals are obsessed with the idea for Americans.

I want to thank you for your thoughts and comments. My challenge for us all is to live like Christ everywhere we are and everything that we are apart of in life, especially politics. We need to remember that politics can become an idol or religion itself for many. Are we as passionate about our Christianity as we are with our politics? Do we listen more to talk radio than we do in the word of God or church? Lets remember what life is all about. Kingdoms will rise and fall but God's Kingdom remains forever!!!

I would like to add: "Be a good citizen. All goverments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, its God's order. So live responsibly as citizens. If your irresponsible to the state, then your irrosponsible with God, and God will hold you responsible. Duly constituted authorities are only a threat if you're trying to get by with something. Decent citizens should have nothing to fear. Do you want to be on good terms with the government? Be responsible citizens and you'll get on just fine, the government working to your advantage. But if your beaking the rules right and left, watch out. The police aren't jst to be admired in their uniforms. God also has an interest in keeping order, and he uses them to do it. Thats why you must live responsibly-not just to avoid punishment but also because it is the right way to live. That's also why you pay taxes-so that any orderly way of life can be maintained. Fulfill your obligations as citizens. Pay your taxes, pay your bills, respect your leaders." Romans 13:1-7
