Back In The Saddle Again

I'm back in the saddle again (so to speak)as far as teaching and blogging on occasions. I want to thank all of my readers for their prayers and support. You have been a true blessing and encouragement to my family as I face these trying times. We are leaning on God and thankful for the outstanding doctors taking care of me. I want to thank all of you for your patience and prayers over the next couple of months.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we placed membership at Kerrville Church of Christ. We have been blessed by the prayers, encouragement, and worship experiences that the elders and ministry staff have demonstrated to our family.

Tonight, I am filling in for Dr. Cummings. I will be teaching on Mark 12:41-43 about the woman who gave her all (also known as the woman with the 2 Minas). It is a lesson which many think of as a parable, but rather than being taught in Jesus' voice, we see a situation through his eyes.

Mark starts this passage by explaining that Jesus and his disciples were at the temple. Jesus watches from a distance, those who were giving money to God. As he observes the givers, a woman stands out to Jesus.
She is a poor widow who gives two silver coins. As Jesus looks at the what is going on, he calls his disciples together and gives them an object lesson. Jesus stresses that these rich people are giving out of what they have, but the poor widow gives her all. The points of discussion for this post and class tonight are:

In what ways did Jesus teach?
What does Jesus see in the story?
How does his view differ from ours?
What is the world's view of giving
What is the church's view of giving?
How should our view be as believers?
In what ways do we give God our all? Are there other ways than monetary giving?
How does Jesus sees us through his eyes?
If Jesus was speaking about us, what would our story be?
What des "real giving" feel like and look like?
What do you think?

Share your thoughts.

It is such a blessing to see you online again Kinney!!

That story is one of my favorites in the bible.. I think of that widow as an example of extravagant giving.. it humbles me and inspires me to want to be such a one.

Love, Bob

PS: I don't do this too often but I recommend to you the blog of my friend Jill.. I think that you will really be blessed by this wonderful gal who is suffering from ALS.

Hi Kinney,
Vicki and myself send our wishes for well being.

To think of Jesus teaching, I see him looking out into the congregation as he watches, simultaneously speaking to his disciples.

This, to me, is a reminder of those words, "Well done" coming from the mouth of the Lord on the day I am to stand with all of those from all the nations for a judgement as to how I lived when I made my commitment to Christ. I see Jesus watching me to see if he can point something about me out to His disciples. That feels good and is exciting to think that Jesus would be watching me.

Delighted to see you blogging again and to hear your doing better! I'll be the first to give your questions a best shot:

In what ways did Jesus teach?
He told stories, asked a lot of questions, and said some pretty inarguable and convicting things.

What does Jesus see in the story?
God and us and how we relate to each other.

How does his view differ from ours?
He could see it from both points of view - God and us.

What is the world's view of giving?
Give until you feel better.

What is the church's view of giving?
Give until you can't help but give.

How should our view be as believers?
How much is needed? How much has God given me? Do I trust Him to provide what I need when I give to provide what others need?

In what ways do we give God our all? Are there other ways than monetary giving?
Phillippians 2 is a convicting expression of how our Example gave. And how much.

How does Jesus sees us through his eyes?
With love - as people trying to grow closer to Him and to each other. With disappointment - as people who try to depend too much on ourselves.

If Jesus was speaking about us, what would our story be?
"They try ... but if they really wanted to succeed, they'd just let my Spirit work through them."

What des "real giving" feel like and look like?
I would have to experience it first-hand in order to be able to describe it.

So what's holding me back?

Me?

Sojourner...You reminded me of a joke that Kinney tells sometimes when he is speaking to a "country church." I'm not sure if he's told it to you before.

He says, "I rode a horse once when I was little. It started kickin' and buckin' and I started screamin' and cryin' and my momma had to unplug it."

That sort of puts them at ease when he's not pretending to be a cowboy.

Very good! So glad to see that you are "back in the saddle again," Kinney.

And we are privileged to carry on in our prayers for you, and especially I'm sure that's so for those around you.

Great thoughts and questions.

I do believe giving must come from the heart, God does love a cheerful giver. But we must learn this as a "habit of the heart." And that requires an ongoing and growing faith. Giving is a grace from God. So that a gift from God, is by nature to be a gift for others, and in that way given back to God. Though I also recall Paul's words here: the necessity of us giving ourselves first to the Lord, and then to others- by God's will.

I am sorry that I haven't responded to comments in a while. This week has been extremely busy. On Tuesday I had an MRI on my brain and upper spinal cord. Then on Wed. night I had an EEG. Each Dr. who did the test said that I would not know the result for a few days. Waiting is the worst part of it all. I have another test on Easter weekend. On that weekend I will be having a 72 hour EEG. I appreciate your continued prayers. I want to thank all of you for your patience with me during this time. I love blogging and will try to update my blog when I have time.

It really felt good teaching for Dr. Cummings last Wed. night. I tried to discuss the questions that I presented to you. The discssion went really good. I will be teaching for Dr. Cummings again in May.

Dr. Cummings is a scholar that really brings the text to life. So, I am honored when asked to fill in for him.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and comments on this blog. You make a difference as I get to see so many different point of views.

Tom,
I want you to know that your family will be in our prayers. I want you to meditate on Psalm 103:1-3. It was a passage that gave me hope and reminder who God is when I was at my lowest point. Love ya brother!!!
