Does The Koran Promote Terror On Those Who Disbelieve In Allah?

I can't believe that it has already been 6 years since the 9/11 attacks. I remember where I was, and I am sure you do as well, when I heard about the towers. Why don't we hear more Muslim clerics saying we are a peaceful, loving religion? Why don't we hear more Muslim clerics denouncing these or any terror attack that takes place in the world today? What does the Koran ( alternately, Quran) say about loving Christians or other religions? Does the Koran promote terror on those who don't believe in Allah?

Listen to the following verses from the Koran:
8:12 "When you Lord revealed the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. I will strike off their heads and strike off the finger tips of them."
3:151 "We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they set up against Allah for which He has sent down no authority, and their abode is the fire, and evil is the abode of the unjust."
59:2 "But Allah came to them whence they did not expect, and cast terror into their hearts; they demolished their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believes; therefore take a lesson, O you who have eyes!"
58:5 Those who resist Allah and His Messenger will be crumbled to dust, as were those before them; for we have already sent down clear signs and the unbelievers will have a humiliating penalty."
9:29: "Fight those who do not believe in Allah."
9:123 "O you who believe! Fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness and know that Allah is with those who guard."
4:74 "Therefore let those fight in the way of Allah, who sells this world's life for the hereafter; and whoever fights in the way of Allah, then be he slain or victorious, We shall grant him a mighty reward."
9:5 "Then when the forbidden moths are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever you find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem."
5.51. " O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever against you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people." ( I could have mentioned other verses but for the sake and length of this post I will not do so.)

When I preached in a prison, it was the fastest growing religion among violent inmates. It is also one of the fastest growing religions in the world today? Why?

You don't have to change. You're violent. That's okay. We will take you like you are if you will believe in Allah or ?.......... Suffer like those Christians in Sudan. How about taking hostages and make a deal with South Korea that no Christian missionaries will be sent into Afganistan.

As a Chrisitan minister I would denounce any act of violence or act of terror done in the name of God or His son Jesus Christ (ie: bombing abortion clinics to the Crusades or any "Holy War").

The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:16 that "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in Him."
John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but save the world through him."
Jesus tells us in Luke 6:27, "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If some strikies you on one cheek, turn to him the other also."
The center of Christianity is love. Jesus himself gives to us commands based on love found in Matthew 22:37-40 as it reads, "Jesus replied, "Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments."

So, on 9/11 let us as Christians let the world know who we are by showing our love to the world. Let our love overflow into our hearts, lives, homes, cars, workplace, stores, neighborhood, in the projects, to the homeless, across the border. May God's love and grace overflow and be made known. Let's remember the lives of those loving others.

So, can you love a Muslim?

God change our hearts.

What do you think?

I love the cliffhanger twist at the end of your post. That is the question that not enough of us struggle with. Do we (or can we) really love our enemies? This is the line which divides us from all of the other religions of the world, the following of a suffering savior. One who claims to follow Christ and yet does not love his enemy, can he claim to follow Christ or is he doing so for other reason?

That said, Islam can easily be caricatured (just like our Old Testament can), wielded like a weapon by those who do not understand the heart of its words. But even with all of that benefit-of-the-doubt in place I am willing to give to honest, peaceloving Muslims one might run into here in the States, it is very difficult to see past these verses in light of the "fruit" of Islam: a massive, worldwide movement of violence directed toward all their enemies (and not just the West, often their own brothers and nearby neighbors). It is often said that not all Muslims are terrorists, but many many many terrorists are Muslims.

Tough post. Thanks!

Wow, I don't know what to say to this... I would like to say that I love everyone, but I guess I'm not quite there yet! I really need to ask God to change my heart in this area. Thanks Preacherman for opening my eyes to this!

I've gotten better, but Islam is PURE evil. The rise of its popularity in our own country is the equivalent of spitting in God's face!

I don't hate muslims. To be honest, I feel sorry for the lie they have been pulled into. Yes, we must love them, but in no way must we EVER adhere to their beliefs. That's the only problem I see within our own country; so many people are trying to cater to their needs, and it should not be this way... (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)

Great post Preacherman!

I think you touch on an important point. It is actually those who take the Koran literally who can embrace violence, not the less fundamental ones. Fortunately, however, the majority of Muslims, at least here in America, are not violent and don't take those words to heart.

And the general Muslim populace's lack of reaction to violence supposedly done in their name... it makes me wonder, should we do more to denounce those of us who slander the name of Christianity, i.e. Fred "God hates gays" Phelps, or bombers of abortion clinics? We tend not to associate ourselves whatsoever with them, but do outsiders?

Those are some sobering quotes. They provide a stark contrast to the peace of God we read about in the Christian scriptures. I've heard (but have not read for myself) that other parts of the Koran teach a more peaceful approach. I wonder how the peaceful Muslims reconcile this paradox. For that matter, I also wonder how the militant ones do. In any case, these quotes remind us that we are in a spiritual war, of which the physical conflicts we see are a mere shadow. This is in God's hands, not ours.

Thanks for adding to the discussion. I appreciate it greatly. I have never read anything from the Koran that has supported peace in any form towards those who are unbelievers. Especially Jews and Christinas. Even those we don't see every Muslim strapping on a bomb doesn't mean that the Koran doesn't teach terrorism or support violence. Just like going to Church doesn't make you a Christian.

Preacherman, I appreciate your thoughts and challenge for us. I really want to read my translation of the Q'uran for myself before I say anything on this. Taking Biblical passages separately can sound pretty awful too; I'm thinking of Old Testament passages.

I want to try to see passages like you quote in context along with allegedly more peaceful passages. I think I need to read the whole of it.

I certainly do not believe the god of Islam is the god of Christianity. Our god, I believe is God, and God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Islam's god does have similarities to our god, all-merciful, to be feared. But our god is a relational being, and in the end puts all other gods out of the god business. He alone is God.

Thanks much, brother. Just the bur I need to get me to read the Q'uran, I hope!

I actually read a book about Islam recently, and I thought the interesting thing was that they know they are not guaranteed salvation. All they can do is hope that their good works out-weigh the bad works. Could you imagine not knowing if you were saved or not?

Here's the kicker though. The fifth pillar of their belief system is the jihad or "Holy War". If they die as a martyr, they are guaranteed salvation. Now the puzzle pieces start to fit together.

I wish someone would tell them that they are just speeding up their journey to hell.

My heart goes out to them. Especially when the Great White Throne judgement comes. How will they feel when they find out there is no Allah?

Power was his drive. Jesus promoted loved and even diminstrated it himself on the cross.

I think we all must come to the understanding that good things can be misinterpreted or interpreted literally.

I mean what did Satan use to justify himself why tempting Christ? The OLD TESTAMENT.

Think about this... If the Bible were made into a movie that accurately portrayed it, the movie would be rated R. I mean can we all agree on that?

The Grace of God has powerfully made & changed me into who I am. I praise God for the New Covenant and that His Son died for my sins.

With that being said, how misunderstood is the Old Testament today... by saved & unsaved? And how many Christians claim to be living under the "New Covenant", yet push the "Old Covenant" theology on others.

This has to go down as one of your best.

Ultimately, the question of whether or not the Koran promotes terror is of no importance. Whether it is a peaceful religion or not is of no importance. The only question that matters is "What does the Koran say about Jesus?" We know that it says that he is not divine, that he did not come from God the Father. That is enough to know.

All the same, we are to love Muslims; not with a gooey sentimentality but with a resolute decision to do good to them and for them. What does that look like in Texas? I'm not exactly sure that that looks like here in the Middle Eastern country where I live because both government and culture do a good job at keeping Muslims insulated from Chrisitians...oddly enough while allowing materialism, astrology and the occult to flourish.

Preacherman-

Sorry to make a lengthy back-comment like this, but I wanted to point something out that I think is important.

I’ve only read bits and pieces of the Koran, but I imagine your’re right that the Koran, in its words, does promote violent opposition, at least at times, to people who don’t belong to Islam.

However, I think that almost everyone who commented on your post overlooked a huge point, namely that a religion is not the same thing as its foundational text. In the Church of Christ we tend to assume this is the case because we aspire to be back-to-the-Bible folks.

But the reality is that hundreds of years of tradition *inevitably* affect how we understand our foundational texts. Martin Luther, whether we like it or not, influences how we read Paul. Augustine and other theologians influence our assumptions about what exactly happened to humanity when Adam and Eve ate the fruit. “Command-example-necessary inference” is a human construction that grew out of an enlightenment tendency to nail down a coherent system, which may or may not have been what Jesus or Paul intended to do at all.

And even if you believe that CofC folks follow just the Bible, I imagine you would agree that the rest of the Christian world is strongly influenced by tradition. Christianity (which exists not in many forms) isn’t the same thing it was in the first century, sixteenth century, or whenever.

So when you talk about what the Koran promotes, I think your claims are reasonable enough. But in reality, every sacred text is read within a tradition, and it is a misunderstanding of the nature of religion to assume (as many do) that only the Muslims who are violent are actually being true to Islam. That allows us to brush off millions of peaceful Muslims because we don’t think they’re being true to their own faith.

A religion –– Christianity included –– is not the words in the book, but how they are interpreted (sometimes ignored) and lived by actual people. Islam right now is a different religion than it was in the past, just as Christianity (wielding influence in the government) is a different thing now than it was in the second century. In some cases, people will live (or try to live) very closely to the book. But if adherents to a religion reject parts of their tradition –– even a major part like violence torward outsiders -- they do not for that reason cease to be real representatives of the religion.

So if we want to know what “Islam” is, we cannot simply read the Koran -- we have to ask Muslims. Many Muslims in many places will tell you that Islam means violence towards outsiders. But in our context in the USA, “Islam” is on the whole something very different, and -- from what I’ve seen in most cases -- not violent toward the rest of us.

Now, if you’re claiming that you saw Muslim clerics come into the prison and actually encourage the inmates to remain violent in converting, then that is indeed an important thing for people to know. But the way you worded it sounded more like you’re supposing that violent prisoners who read the Koran would come to that conclusion themselves, and that in your opinion that must be the reason they’re converting. That would be an unfair claim to make, since Islam can ignore parts of its scripture if it wants to.

In any event, most of us don’t know a lot of prisoners. I grew up with several Muslim friends, and I have no reason to think they intended me any more harm than I intended them. (I think we both thought the other was going to hell, but that’s hardly saying we meant each other harm.)

So if we’re talking foreign policy, we need to consider the Koran and how its violent passages are used by people who wish us harm. But for most of us, Islam is the people we meet here in the states, most of whom are not violent. This could theoretically be because the passages in their real context in the Koran are’t actually violent, but it could also be because many Muslims simply reject or forcefully reinterpret the Koran’s clear meaning in context. Jews and Christians have constantly done that with the Bible over the centuries, and I don’t always think it’s wrong.

You may well already agree with most of what I’ve said, but I think most people will automatically assume that Koran = Islam, and so in that sense I think your post is very misleading, even if it’s factually accurate.

By the way, I do love where you went with the post at the end. I just think it’s important that we love Muslims in our nation for who they are, not for who we make them into by assuming we know how they should read/obey their scriptures.

Respectfully-
Scott

Please accept my respects.

I do not know much but I would like to put forward some words for thought.

Many people speak of God, whether they be 'Christian' 'Muslim' or 'Hindu'. They speak as if they know His desire and understand His actions and so on. Sadly, it seems everyone has become a great authority on God, and label themselves accordingly, pledging their allegiance to a particular group, sect, 'religion' or cult. They are born in a particular family and identify with their bodily designation. "I am Christian" "I am Muslim" "I am black" or "I am a woman". If you give a thousand people the Bible, you will get a thousand different opinions on its meaning. People try to figure out God and scripture with the power of their tiny minds. How can a person understand the inconceivable? It is like trying to wrap the entire world with a small candy wrapper. This point is very deep, so I will finish here with a few thoughts in conclusion.

Truly there is only one religion, and that is love for God. A person may be well versed in all scriptures of the world, including the Vedanta, Bible and Koran, yet never taste the nectar of love for God. This love is like the illumination of the sun, darkness and ignorance are dispelled and a person sees everything clearly, as it is. Unless a person surrenders their heart in love to the Supreme Person, then there is no hope to understand the Bible, Koran or Vedas. God gives a person the understanding by which they can come to Him. This brings me to my last point.

It is true that if a person wants to learn any subject matter, he must have a teacher. If a person tries to understand scripture alone, he is sure to fumble due to his imperfection. The teacher, therefore must be bonafide, a representative of God, a person who is actually the confidential loving servant of God. Such an empowered person can plant the seed of love for God in the heart of the student, where, if cultivated, real love can grow perfectly. An example of accepting a teacher was given in Jesus' life, accepting John the Baptist. Even though he did not need a teacher, Jesus teaches by example as do all bonafide teachers, lovers of God.

The process to find such a teacher depends upon the actual intent of each individual. This was also taught by Jesus Christ. "If you want to do the will of my Father, then you will know that I am from Him". God, who is within the heart of all living entities, gives a person the vision to see if that person is really His representative. "Yes, this is my representative, follow him, listen to his instructions". Unless a person sincerely wants to know God, they will simply be led by their minds, whether it is in the world of sin (trying to be the enjoyers of everyone and everything) or the socalled world of 'religion' where by they cheat the people according to the demands of their mind (for fame, name, money, power and so on).

Thank you for taking the time to read, and I am sorry if I have offended anyone. May your sincere faith and attraction to know and love the Lord bring you ever closer to Him. Krishna - Jehovah - Allah

All religions are exclusive. To be an ardent follower than you must believe their tennants. However a relationship is different. I have a relationship with my Father through His Son. This relationship was established through faith and trust in a friend and provider. Although I have never seen Him, I came to love Him because He has provided when everyone else could not. In sickness He cured me, when I was hungry, He gave me food, when I was in jail he gave me comfort. I do not say these things because I paraphrase the Bible, I say these things because they really did happen to me. To love this person is to love myself and all others to the point of giving up my life so others might live. When you learn to love this way, you are at liberty to speak of this personal Friend, whether it is at the super table of your enemy or at the gunpoint of a robber, or helping your neighbor accross the street. This kind of love has a very high cost. If it cost God his Son, it will cost you everything. I know, for I have given it all, I live on the generosity of what my personal Friend gives me and I in turn give it to others. This is how we grow. It is contagious. I am humbled by those who have also given to me so generously and prayed on my behalf to my Friend. If you want to see this happen in your life, seek Him first, He will send you to the people who want you to speak to. Where His Holy Spirit is already been at work. I have talked with so many people across this nation, from Puerto Rico, to California, from Wisconsin to Louisanna. I have found Muslims and Jews, and Hindus to talk to about my Friend and most want to listen about having this kind of relationship. I sincerely love them all. I have come to the knowledge that there is a God and He is in control of all things. I just happen to also believe that I am imperfect in His sight and needed to find the one person that could make me whole in His sight. His ONLY SON, my savior, Jesus the Christ. If you believe this also, than you are one of His, a Saint. God bless you always.

In my experience those who claim to believe a Religious text hate to have those beliefs challenged. Is their belief so weak or point of view so weak or their particular view of God so weak that it dare not be challenged? Is Allah the same God as the Christian God?

Recently I have been asking myself some questions. If you are good person how would you live your life differently in your relationship with other humans if there was no God? If you are a bad person how would you live your life differently in your relationship with other humans if you believed in God?

The reason I ask is that around me every day I see people who do not believe in God who do wonderful supportive acts of others and at the same time I see statistics that show there are more believers in prison than non-believers.

On our planet there are hundreds of millions of good people who have no God belief and have had no such belief for years who live in peace and harmony with their neighbours. Yet a few who do believe have managed to turn traveling into a more stressful, more time consuming, more inconvenient fearful activity than ever.

How can this be?

there are 1,283,000 examples of mass killings in the New Testament alone. Islam is not a violent religion. Anyone can use and misconstrue religious texts to agree with their own personal beliefs. Many people, regardless of their beliefs or religion, unfortunately use religion as an excuse or justification for their own acts of violence. Muslims who think and act violently are NOT the majority at all. It is a small group who beats a loud drum.

I asked myself that question and so many Christians today do the opposite... we hate them, when by right Christ has called us to love them... love them as we would love ourselves... I don't love their religion necessarily but I think we ought to love these people that practice this religion... and do keep in mind not all Muslims support these acts... I cry for these people that live in this region Muslim or not they are still God's people and the only way we overcome these things is by prayer and showing these people sincere love... Its not easy, trust me I live in a country where Islam is everything but I want to love them the way Jesus would... Pray and ask God for a heart of compassion... how are we any different from them if we treat them with hate and animosity?? Exactly then we aren't any different, I urge Christians lovingly to love them just as we in the body of Christ love each other...

I am humbled by the comments of Gar. Thank you for your wise and spiritual thoughts.

It is important to make a distinction between religion and spirituality.

We all seek God but get bogged down by sticking to our chosen road. The various roads being our individual religions.

God has sent various Messiahs and Prophets from time to time to guide us so that we can eventually reach Him and ultimate bliss.

It is the organised religion and various holy books written by various individuals as to their interpretations of the Messiah's message that permit evil people to twist, misguide the genuine Messiah's message of peace & love.

Many texts have been written by fallible humans a long time after the Messiah has left us and carry the writers own message

Religions all over have totally failed to meet the spiritual needs of people.

Religions have been corrupted by evil people to satisfy their craving for power over fellow men.

Many so called "religious people" are filled with anger, hate, greed, lust and ego. None of this can take us any closer to our Lord, our God.

There is but one God, and we can meet our Lord only by being true and loving.

To defend oneself is permitted as a truth but any individual, text or institution that promotes hate, violence, inequality, & deprives any of God's creatures and creations dignity should be condemned and systematically eradicated by all people.

Let us not submit to such people by granting them authority over our resources, our vote, our independence. Most of all do not permit them to influence our children.

Everyone wants to change the world but nobody wants to change themselves. Let us surrender totally to God and have faith in Him, and experience heaven in your lifetime and not after death.

I have been fortunate that a Guru ( teacher & guide) has accepted me as a disciple and am personally experiencing a more meaningful life for myself, and further I am told that I am enriching the lives of many of the people I interact with.

May grant us all strength to do good, resist evil, and wisdom to know the difference.

Rainy

It's true that today's most terrorists r muslims. But remember if they r terrorists then those people who hate islam are the creators. I'm not a muslim, but i would like to draw ur attention to this fact...
There is a quote in kuran which says that "When an innocent man dies, then innocence dies with him".
This is the strategy the terrorists r using. They'll kill an innocent person so that people begin to hate the whole muslim community & thus create even more terrorists (the act of american govt. after the 9/11 attack is one such example of this foolishness) which starts a chain reaction which'll never stop if we don't change....

Cherry picking holy text is easy, as you demonstrated. But it's a double edge sword that can come back to bite you in the rear.

You pick all the negative quotes from islamic text, and the posative ones from your text, and try to say they are evil and you are reighteous. And all the ignorant christians of the world buy your bull like the sheep they are. But I have to ask, why did you not mention this passage from YOUR text?

Jesus- "But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.' Luke 19:27

Probably because then people would know you're not any better than those you are attacking here.

It helps when we take violent actions by Muslims and call them "terrorism" but violent actions by non-Muslims and call them "mental illness"
